Winter Care Tips for Your Skin

Don’t let the cold rob your skin of its glow

The sad truth is that your skin and the winters are not exactly best friends. Much as you may enjoy the respite from the heat, you will have noticed that your skin feels drier during the colder months of the year. In fact, complaints of dry, flaky and patchy skin tormented with fine lines are quite common during the winters. However, with a little tender loving care, there is no reason why your skin shouldn’t glow like it is meant to – even during the harsh winters.

Before we take you through the steps that will ensure healthy, nourished skin from November to March, let us understand why exactly your skin feels dull and dry during the winters.

Why does your skin feel dry during the winter months?

Loss of moisture

Well, dry skin is very common during the winters, when the moisture levels drop. The water in your skin evaporates more quickly when it is cold outside, making it feel dry and stretchy.

Indoor heating

The temptation to turn up the heater and snuggle in with a blanket to beat the cold is very strong. However, indoor heating is actually quite bad for your skin, as it dries the air, leading to dry and dehydrated skin.

Hot showers

While we understand why it is almost impossible to enjoy a nice, cold shower during the winter months, the sad truth is that hot water strips your skin of its protective oils, leaving it dry and itchy.

All of these factors, combined with the fact that our water intake tends to go down during the winters and that we tend to ignore our sunscreen, contribute to duller looking and faster aging skin in the winters.

What can you do to protect your skin during the winters?

1. Moisturize, moisturize and moisturize some more

The simplest and most effective way to combat dry skin? Moisturize it! We recommend using a good body moisturizer as soon as you step out of the shower to lock in the moisture and make your skin feel soft and smooth. Choose a moisturizer that’s made of naturally hydrating ingredients like shea butter, cocoa butter and essential oils to deliver that extra boost of moisture to your skin.

Wow Skin Revive Nectar Moisturizer gets absorbed into your skin easily, leaving it soft and supple and removing all traces of dryness. It is composed of shea and cocoa butters along with argan, sweet almond, grapeseed and wheat germ oils to hydrate your skin.

Also check out the Body Cupid range of body lotions. Available in several exotic fragrances like Tuberose, Red Plum, Cherrylicious, Peach Addict, Sweet Serenity and Apple Blossom, these come enriched with pure seed oils, botanical butters and extracts to keep your skin lush.

2. Drink more water

When the temperature outside drops, it is only natural to feel less thirsty. However, lowering your water intake is a BIG mistake. Your skin is 60% water, which means, of course, that lack of water leaves it dehydrated and duller.

Remember your grandmom’s advice of drinking eight glasses of water a day? Take it to heart and see the difference in your skin for yourself.

3. Exfoliate for smoother skin

Exfoliating your skin removes dead skin cells and leaves it softer, smoother and glowing. This is a skincare step that people often tend to skip during the winters. However, a gentle scrub to buff away the dead cells and allow healthier skin to come out is exactly what your skin needs. Exfoliate after your bath twice a week for soft, glowing skin.

Body Cupid’s range of body scrubs nourishes your skin while lifting away impurities, dirt and dead skin. Made of natural exfoliant ingredients and nourishing botanical oils, these gentle scrubs will help reveal fresh, silky smooth skin.

4. Don’t skip the sunscreen

No sunshine outside does not automatically equal no sunscreen. Any dermatologist will tell you that protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays is a year-round job. Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen with high sun protection factor (SPF) to protect your skin from UV rays and prevent signs of sun damage like dullness and pigmentation.

WOW Skin Science AM2PM Sunscreen with SPF 50 suits all skin types. The high SPF count protects your skin from damaging UVA and UVB sunrays, preventing signs of ageing and skin darkening. It is also totally free of parabens and mineral oils, making it the perfect addition to your winter skincare regime.

If you live in a polluted area, or if your daily commute or work is through a polluted zone, we recommend WOW Anti Pollution Sunscreen that protects your skin from damaging onslaught of both, pollution particle PM 2.5 and UVA & UVB rays .

5. Take baths with lukewarm water

Hot water showers can strip your skin of its protective oils, leaving it dry, tight and flaky. To prevent that, shower with lukewarm water and use a moisturizing shower gel during the harsh winter months.

Pick a Body Wash from WOW or a shower gel from Body Cupid (so many amazing options!) All are guaranteed sulphate free and have been infused with natural, hydrating ingredients to leave your skin nourished and enticingly fragrant too.
