7 Must-Know Tips for Really Effective Hair Oiling Regimen
Oil Massage, the Time-Old Beauty Ritual Your Hair Loves
Grandma, aunts and ma are absolutely right when they tell you to give your hair a good oil massage (or champi as we call it in India) to solve all your hair woes like frizzy, weak, thin, falling, flaky, dull and drab hair.
If there is one beauty ritual that improves all types of hair, it is applying and massaging oil on hair and scalp the right way. A rightly done oil massage with the right kind of hair oil is indeed a total hair saver.
Jawed Habib, India’s best known hair stylist says in his book ‘Hair Yoga’, “Oiling hair makes hair look soft and feel healthy. The process of oiling also takes care of hair problems like dandruff, hair dryness and hair damage.”
Here are some hair oiling tips to help you on the champi way to gorgeous hair!
1. Read the ingredient list. There are things that should not be there.
Check the ingredient list given on the packaging carefully. Junk it totally if it mentions any of the following: liquid paraffin, baby oil, mineral oil, petrolatum, refined oil, parabens. Most of these are cheap fillers that actually harm your hair. Refined oils are subjected to heat treatment and that destroys healthiness of the oil. Parabens is a harmful preservative that can upset body’s hormonal balance.
2. Warm the oil slightly before applying it. Apply all over the scalp, and from roots to tips on hair.
Warm (not hot) oil is able to penetrate into your scalp and hair easily for higher protective and nourishing effect. Also, you need to part your hair in sections and then apply oil so that every inch of your scalp gets oil coverage. Trust us; you don’t need loads of oil. Especially if you are using an oil bottle with a spray nozzle, it will help you get maximum coverage with near zero oil wastage. Spray some oil on your palms, rub together slightly and gently run along the length of hair.
3. Read the ingredient list. You want natural goodness of pure oils, vitamins and essential oils in it.
A good quality hair oil should have cold pressed plant oils like almond, argan, apricot, coconut, jojoba, olive, sesame, grapeseed and safflower etc. The reason is simple: pure cold pressed oils have their essential fatty acids intact and different cold pressed oils have different fatty acids. Some other ingredients that add more value to your hair oil are vitamin E and pure essential oils like rosemary, cedarwood, tea tree, peppermint and lavender etc – all acclaimed for improving hair.
4. Massage the scalp and comb the hair after oiling for enhanced benefits.
Now gently massage all over the scalp with fingertips (not nails). Never rub your hair as any harsh treatment can damage hair shafts. A 5 to 10 minute massage is just right. Now gently comb your hair using a wide toothed nylon or wooden comb. Hard plastic or metal combs can harm your hair and scalp, so steer clear of these. Massaging and combing boost blood flow to scalp for increased absorption of nutrients. . You can also bend your hair forward while massaging to further boost the scalp blood flow. Combing also helps spread the oil evenly through the length of the hair.
5. Wrap a hot towel for 10-15 minutes to steam treat hair.
Dip a towel in reasonably hot water, wring well and wrap around freshly oiled hair for 10-15 minutes. You can also soak your towel in cold water, wring it well and then heat it in a microwave for 30 seconds. Hot towel treatment helps hair and scalp absorb oil better for more nourishment. Do remember, the towel should be bearably hot, not scalding.
6. Oil your hair at least once or twice a week.
Good effects of oiling show up on hair as softer texture, less hair fall, disappearing split ends, less dandruff or flakes, reduced frizzing, more glossiness and easier manageability. However, to get these benefits to show up on your tresses, you need to oil your hair regularly not occasionally. We recommend at least one or two oiling and massage sessions per week.
7. Leave oil on for half an hour (or overnight; if you can) before shampoo.
Give your oiled hair resting time of at least half an hour. If you can leave the oil on overnight, even better. Wash hair with a sulphate & paraben-free shampoo (try a shampoo from WOW Hair Care range to suit your specific hair needs).
